Weymouth is a ‘mature’ community, meaning that compared to other
municipalities, Weymouth has been almost completely developed in terms of
land area. Weymouth is the largest residential town offering numerous
amenities, conveniences, and public services to its residents. Just 10
miles south of Boston and directly accessible to Route 3, the community
provides affordable new housing and established homes for families who
wish to live near the city but enjoy the less hectic pace of a suburb.
Weymouth is the second oldest town in the Commonwealth, behind
Plymouth , and the site of the first town meeting. The town was a fishing and
agricultural community for almost two hundred years.
As a coastal community, Weymouth provides much in recreational
activity. The town offers an extensive program in water safety and swimming
instruction at Wessagusset Beach, and at Whitman’s Pond; and boaters
enjoy the waters of Quincy and Hingham Bays.
Primarily a residential area today, Weymouth ’s population is large
enough to be a city, but the community retains much of its old New England
flavor. The town houses a number of historic sites, including the
Abigail Adams House where Abigail, wife of President John Adams and mother
of President John Quincy Adams, was born.
